So a lot of my old Beasttale art is stuck at only viewable to me, soooo. Should I repost the old stuff somewhere else? Idk what to do because I don’t have access to the files themselves anymore…I’m actually upset that I can’t even censor the art then appeal it :/ it’s just stuck forever as no view :(
A couple of weeks ago we announced an update to our Community Guidelines regarding adult content, and we’ve received a lot of questions and feedback from you. First and foremost, we are sorry that this has not been an easy transition and we know we can do a better job of explaining what we’re doing. We knew this wasn’t going to be an easy task and we appreciate your patience as we work through the challenges and limitations of correctly flagging tens of billions of GIFs, videos, and photos.
Today, December 17th, our policy begins to take effect. This means that we will start hiding – not deleting – posts that contain GIFs, videos, and photos from public view that are in violation of our policy. Again, this is a complex problem, and over the coming weeks we will gradually, and carefully, flag more adult content. (Yes, we will still make mistakes, but hopefully fewer and fewer.)
More importantly, we want to clarify the things that you, as a community, have asked about the most.
Tumblr will always be a place to explore your identity. Tumblr has always been home to marginalized communities and always will be. We fully recognize Tumblr’s special obligation to these communities and are committed to ensuring that our new policy on adult content does not silence the vital conversations that take place here every day. LGBTQ+ conversations, exploration of sexuality and gender, efforts to document the lives and challenges of those in the sex worker industry, and posts with pictures, videos, and GIFs of gender-confirmation surgery are all examples of content that is not only permitted on Tumblr but actively encouraged.
We also want to reiterate some important information from our Support post:
Your content will not be deleted. If your post(s) are flagged under the new policy, they will be hidden from public view and will only be visible to you. You can appeal these flags if you feel your content was erroneously marked as adult content. Upcoming feature changes will also make appeals more manageable for those of you with multiple flagged posts. Your blog won’t be deleted if you’ve posted adult content in the past, and there is nothing you need to do if you have interacted with adult content up until now–it will just be flagged and not publicly viewable. Don’t forget too that you can download your content. It’s yours after all, and we don’t take that lightly.
What is still permitted? We’ve heard a lot of concern about what the policy does not permit, but we want to make sure that you also know what is still permitted:
Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, specifically sculptures and illustrations, is also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr. Although, photorealistic imagery or photography – images, videos, or GIFs – with real humans that include exposed genitals or female-presenting (yeah, we know you hate this term) nipples or depict sex acts is not allowed per our guidelines.
Examples of exceptions that are still permitted but that you may need to appeal if they are misclassified are: exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery.
The automated tools will improve. Having a post mistakenly flagged as adult totally sucks; we understand and agree that there have been too many wrongfully flagged posts since we announced the policy change. With tens of billions of GIFs, videos, and photos to review and millions of new posts every day, we really need your help to get it right.
The more you help by reporting content that’s not permitted and by appealing content that you believe was flagged incorrectly, the better our automated tools will get at classifying your posts correctly. The more content these tools review, the more they will learn the difference between what’s permitted and what’s not. Most importantly, your content won’t be deleted if erroneously flagged and all appeals will be sent to a real, live human who can make the appropriate call.
We love Tumblr and the communities that call Tumblr home. You are Tumblr. This place has always been a reflection of the voices and communities that thrive here. As you’ve always done, help us continue to shape Tumblr into the community you want it to be.
Once, I encountered the funny story of an AI image descriptor with a sheep obsession. It had been trained on pictures of fields of sheep. Therefore, it tagged anything in a field as 'sheep', including an empty field, because they work on statistical probability. Therefore, it thinks "ah, a field! there's probably a sheep here." (It's a bit more complicated but basically that.) It also couldn't recognise sheep in places that weren't fields, such as petrol stations or barns. [cont]
Now, the alarming aspect of this story is that the very same technology is probably what tumblr is using to identify porn. Now, if it can’t tell that an empty field is not, in fact, full of sheep, what hope do we have that it can’t tell an empty room isn’t full of writing human forms engaged in passionate coitus?
this really does sound like an episode of black mirror
This is gonna produce some absolutely baffling pornography.
…. oh my fucking god they actually are using open source software. They’re using a fucking one-layer unidirectional bicategory tag-trained neural network. This will never work. Literally, it will never work. There’s just not enough algorithmic complexity to do what they’re asking of it. I bet you I could prove on a mathematical level that this joke of a neural net fundamentally lacks the abstraction necessary to do its job.
This will never get better. Their algorithm will never stop fucking up, it will never actually flag porn reliably and it will always require a massive quantity of human hours to deal with the deluge of mistagged pictures. This isn’t just a case of an insufficiently trained algorithm, it’s just … this is the most basic neural network you can make. It probably hasa a lot of neurons and has loads of training data but like … you can’t just brute force this kind of stuff. One layer of neurons is just Not Enough.
Also, just to make this clear, Tumblr lied. I mean, we already know this, but I mean they liiiieeeeed. All that stuff they promised about what would or would not be censored? That cannot be delivered on with a system this simple. Nude classical sculptures, political protests, male-presenting nipples (really Tumblr?), nude art outside the context of sex, all that? You cannot train a bicategory one-layer neural network to exclude those things. It cannot be done. Tumblr never intended for those things to actually be permitted, they were just lying. Because the system they have cannot actually do what they said it would and never will be able to.
Also, this kind of system is super vulnerable to counter-neural strategies. I bet you before the end of the month someone hooks up their own open source one layer bicategory neural network which puts an imperceptible (to humans) layer of patterned static over arbitrary images, and trains it by having it bot-post static-ed images to Tumblr and reinforcing based on whether the images are labeled nsfw or sfw. Seriously, within a month someone will have an input-output machine which can turn any image ‘sfw’ in Tumblr’s eyes.
This is genuinely pathetic. Like, I have real pity for whoever implemented this, because it’s clear Tumblr doesn’t actually have any engineers with any expertise with machine learning left at all and they foisted the job off on some poor bastard who has no idea what they’re doing and is going to get all kinds of flak for their (perfectly reasonable and predetermined) failure from management.
Moral: Tumblr will soon be the site of an AI war, who’s outcome will decide all our fates.
AI War WOULD be caused by a combination of porn and capitalistic greed
So I’ve finally reached a point where I’m tired of either having to borrow my roommates computer or trying to make things work on my phone to accomplish anything on the wonderful thing that is the internet. Since my old laptop finally gave up the ghost 4 years ago I’ve tried to make due as best I could.
I’ve got some new projects and endeviors that I’m trying to branch out into (some of you know them, if you are interested send me a message and I’ll be glad to tell you all about them) but to do that and help bolster my income I need a new PC. I’ve looked into many and talked to a lot of my more tech savvy friends and it seems what I’ve decided on at the moment is Surface Pro 6. The pack of the surface, keyboard, and stylis is the same price currently as the 5 so that’s what I’m shooting for.
It will do everything I could need at the moment; I mean I’d really like the surface studio, but that’s far from a reality now, one can dream.
Really what I’m asking for is some assistance.
We had a roommate move out so the funds I was saving up for it had to go to help pay off the sudden gap in income for the household, so I’m behind the 8ball and asking for anything you guys can send my way to help. Even small amounts like 5 or 10 go a very very long way, because if 100 people gave 10 that’s 1000 bucks, so it all adds up very fast.
And I *know* many are probably in a simular boat this season so even if you can’t help dirrectly getting the word out or spreading it around would also be great.
At the very least I want to thank you for taking the time to read this and I want you all to know I hope you have absolutely amazing Holidays! ^u^
I get the occasional error message for a few images that were originally hosted on imageshack, or certain wikis, but for the most part? Everything is downloading really well, even videos. It took my computer around 10 minutes to back up my transformers blog, which had over 10k posts of audio, video, images, gifs, and text posts. Obviously it ends up being a file bigger than a zip, but for reference, my 10k+ blog was wrapped up into 6.7GB.
What it does not save: likes, PM/ inbox, and drafts.
I for one dont have TOO many drafts that I’m willing to save anyways, so I’ll just be combing through those manually.
Pornhub also encourages women to go to college and get an education, AND they plowed away snow at one point. They are the chaotic good we need in the world.
Plus, Tumblr should have KNOWN better. Legit porn places like Pornhub HAVE to have a good filtering system or they get shut down. The fact they didn’t ask how Pornhub keeps kid porn off their site is sketchy at best and stupid at worst.
Its kinda funny, that an actual porn site is pretty much telling Tumblr, “Man, you dun fucked up.”
Yeah, you can do ANYTHING on pornhub. Some people having gaming channels on there. However, pornhub isn’t stupid. They’re not going to suddenly become pure just because you got dudes playing Minecraft.
